Allegany County: Per Capita Income

Map Description

This map presents the 1999 per capita income for the total population of each Town within Allegany County, NY.  This map is intended to assist in understanding population demographics within Allegany County.

Analytical Overview

Per capita income ranges from $10,010 in the Town of Caneadea to $19,273 in the Town of Andover.  The mean per capita income among all Allegany County Towns is $14,602.  This excludes the portion of the Oil Springs Indian Reservation occurring in Allegany County.

The demographic data used in this map was acquired from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Factfinder Census 2000 Summary File 3 Geographic Comparison Table (GCT) P14: Income and Poverty in 1999: 2000.  The attribute used is “Per capita income in 1999 (dollars).”

The following explanation of how poverty is defined is taken from the American Factfinder Help: “Per capita income is the mean income computed for every man, woman, and child in a particular group. It is derived by dividing the total income of a particular group by the total population in that group.”  Note that Summary File 3 contains population and housing data collected from a 1-in-6 sample and weighted to represent the total population.
