This map (above is a sample clip) presents the number of individuals per square mile within each Census 2000 census tract in Allegany County, NY.  This map is intended to assist in understanding population distribution and density within Allegany County.

Analytical Overview

Population densities in Allegany County range from 14.8 persons per mile to 115.1 persons per mile.  The 14.8 persons per mile census tract represents the eastern portion of the Oil Springs Indian Reservation (tract 9402).  Excluding this tract, the next lowest population density is 20.8 persons per square mile, occurring in the northeast corner of the County (tract 9501).  The tract with the highest population density (115.1) represents portions of Wellsville and Scio (tract 9507).

The 2000 census tract geographic boundary data utilized in this map was downloaded directly from the U.S. Census Bureau.  However, the population density values for the 2000 census tracts used in this map was calculated by Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI), using U.S. Census Bureau data.  The ESRI Data & Maps 2002 CD-ROM Set available with ESRI software includes a census tracts data layer.  One of the feature attributes for this data layer is Pop00_SqMi.  This map utilizes those attribute values for the tracts within Allegany County, NY.
