Allegany County: Public Transportation Services Area

(ACT & HAT Bus Routes)

Map Description

This map (above is a sample clip) presents the public transportation service area in Allegany County.  Public transportation in Allegany County primarily consists of the Allegany County Transit (ACT) bus system.  ACT routes and passenger pickup areas are mapped.  In rural areas public transportation is often limited, leaving large areas without a public transportation option.  For the rural poor, limited public transportation may pose a challenge, as those in need of services have limited travel options in order to access a service provider’s location.  This map begins to explore whether this is a reality in Allegany County.

Analytical Overview

Allegany County Transit (ACT) routes were mapped using route descriptions - listing where the bus stopped and when - contained in a pamphlet ACT published in July of 2005.  In events of uncertainty as to how the route moved from stop to stop, route maps published by ACT in February 2001 were consulted, as were road maps for Allegany County.  ACT drivers will pick up a passenger at any safe location on their fixed route.  Bus routes were buffered by 3/4 mile (3960') as ACT drivers will deviate off their scheduled route up to 3/4 of a mile to pick up a customer at their door.

Hornell Area Transit (HAT) is based in Steuben County (to the East) but services the Village of Alfred.  The HAT route servicing Alfred was mapped using a route description provided by HAT staff in the summer of 2005.
