In June 2005, the RJI GIS team carried out an analysis to assist in the identification of an Allegany County peer-set. This peer-set consists of New York State counties with similar values for a number of Census-derived demographic criteria. The resulting PowerPoint presentation: “Using Census 2000 Data and GIS to Identify A Possible Allegany County Peer-set” contains the maps produced from this analysis, including:
Population of Largest Place Commuting Patterns Population Density Population with income below Poverty Level Per Capita Income Percent Unemployment Median House Value Percent Families with Female Parent, No Husband Present (i.e. single mothers) Average Family Size Percent of Population that is Caucasian Percent Population Under 18 Years of Age Percent Population Over 49 Years of Age Rate of Population Growth 1990 to 2004
*This analysis was inspired by the talk “Allegany County Trends: Challenges and Opportunities” given by Dr. Paul Eberts at Alfred University in October of 2004. As a part of his talk, Allegany County was compared to other counties in New York to establish peers. Two criteria were utilized to identify the peer-set: size of largest place and percent of work force that commuted across County boundaries. These are the first two maps in the attached PowerPoint. For more information on Dr. Eberts work, see the publication: Socioeconomic Trends and Well-being Indicators in New York State, 1950-2000.
